Brazilian Slate Floor Renovation at a Country House near Brampton
Here we have a beautiful Brazilian Slate floor at a lovely country house on the outskirts of Brampton near the Cumbrian border. The owner had maintained the floor well but was slowly losing the battle as the sealer worn off and decided it was time to have the floor deep cleaned and sealed.

The Brazilian slate was stunning with incredible natural colour variation and movement throughout the stone however it had now lost much of its vibrancy due to ingrained dirt, surface contamination and old residues which had dulled the finish.
Having surveyed the floor and discussed its renovation with the owner I put together a plan that would safely deep clean the floor and bring back the rich natural tones that make Brazilian slate so distinctive. The client didn’t want a shiny finish, so I recommended we use a matt sealer.
Cleaning a Brazilian Slate Tiled Floor
The floor was given an initial deep clean using Tile Doctor Pro-Clean to remove embedded dirt and contaminants from the surface of the stone. As usual this was applied and left to soak in for ten minutes before being scrubbed into the stone using a black pad fitted to a rotary machine and a stiff brush used along the grout lines. The soils generated were then rinsed away with water and extracted with a wet vacuum.

Next an application of Tile Doctor Remove & Go was applied to break down old residues and previous sealers. Sealers wear at different rates depending on how busy that section of a floor is and in some extreme cases you can see track marks on the most travelled section. It’s important therefore to ensure all the sealer is removed from every part of the floor so you can achieve a consistent finish. After letting the solution soak in the floor was scrubbed again using another black pad. This mechanical agitation and extraction cleaning process thoroughly cleans the slate and restores it to its original state.
Once done the floor was carefully rinsed and extracted again to remove any trace of cleaning product prior to sealing.

Sealing a Brazilian Slate Tiled Floor
As mentioned, the client didn’t want a shiny finish, so we opted for Tile Doctor Colour Grow Sealer which is a colour enhancing impregnator that soaks into the stone, occupying the pores protecting the stone from within. Impregnators are hard wearing and will providing durable long-term protection that keeps the dirt on the surface where it can be easily cleaned away.

The completed restoration brought the floor back to life, revealing the beautiful deep tones, natural markings and colour variation within the slate, perfectly complementing the character of the country house.

For aftercare I recommended Tile Doctor’s Neutral Tile Cleaner which is a mild yet effective product that won’t degrade the sealer. If choosing a product in the supermarket always read the label, many are simply too strong and will strip the sealer.
